When Are Static Phase Converters Used and How They Work
- A static phase converter uses a start capacitor, and sometimes a run capacitor and a relay, to generate the third phase of power.
- The capacitor provides a temporary boost of current to get the motor spinning.
- Once the motor reaches operating speed, the relay disengages the capacitor, and the motor continues to run on single-phase power.
Static Phase Converter Applications and Limitations
- Light-to-medium loads and intermittent use, such as small saws, drill presses, or meat grinders.
- They reduce motor output to about 50-70% of its rated capacity. If the motor mechanicals are hydraulic output does not need to be reduced.
- The unbalanced power output can cause the motor to run hotter and potentially shorten its lifespan.
- They are not suitable for continuous operations or heavy-duty equipment like CNC machines.
