What is a static phase converter?
Miniphase Static Converter made in the USA
What They Are and How They Work A static phase converter uses a start capacitor, and sometimes a run capacitor and a relay, to generate the third phase of power. The capacitor provides a temporary boost of current to get the motor spinning. Once the motor reaches operating speed, the relay disengages the capacitor, and the motor continues to run on single-phase power. Applications and Limitations Best for: Light-to-medium loads and intermittent use, such as small saws, drill presses, or meat grinders. Limitations: They reduce motor output to about 50-70% of its rated capacity. The unbalanced power output can cause the motor to run hotter and potentially shorten its lifespan. They are not suitable for continuous operations or heavy-duty equipment like CNC machines. Comparison with Other Converter Types Rotary Phase Converters: Use an idler motor to generate a balanced, true third phase, suitable for full-power and continuous operation. Digital/VFD Phase Converters: Offer the most precise control and efficiency, producing a pure sine wave and full power, and are ideal for sensitive or demanding applications like CNC machines. Static Phase Converters

Static Phase Converters use capacitors to provide the needed third phase to start a three-phase motor from a single-power source, however they only deliver ~60-70% of the motor’s rated power after startup, making them suitable for light-duty, intermittent applications like saws or drill presses, but not for heavy, continuous, or CNC-controlled loads. Our goal today is to generally share what static phase converters are, how they work, their applications and limitations, and how they compare to other types of phase converters like rotary, digital, and  VFD models.

When are static phase converters ideal to use?

Static Phase Converters unboxing

When Are Static Phase Converters Used and How They Work

  • A static phase converter uses a start capacitor, and sometimes a run capacitor and a relay, to generate the third phase of power.
  • The capacitor provides a temporary boost of current to get the motor spinning.
  • Once the motor reaches operating speed, the relay disengages the capacitor, and the motor continues to run on single-phase power.

Static Phase Converter Applications and Limitations

  • Light-to-medium loads and intermittent use, such as small saws, drill presses, or meat grinders.
  • They reduce motor output to about 50-70% of its rated capacity. If the motor mechanicals are hydraulic output does not need to be reduced.
  • The unbalanced power output can cause the motor to run hotter and potentially shorten its lifespan.
  • They are not suitable for continuous operations or heavy-duty equipment like CNC machines.

Variable Frequency Drives (VFD)

A Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) is an electronic device that controls the speed and torque of an AC motor by adjusting the frequency and voltage of the power supplied to it. VFDs work by first converting incoming AC power to DC power, and then converting that DC power back to variable-frequency AC power using an inverter. This allows for energy savings by matching the motor’s speed to the specific needs of the application, such as in pumps, fans, and HVAC systems, instead of running at a constant, fixed speed.
